This week in Summer Learning Series we are learning all about trains! There are so many ways to explore trains as they are one of the oldest forms of transportation and no matter where you live you should be able to find a train to visit or ride!
We hope we give you some fun ideas of things to do with your kids this summer with our Summer Learning series. We believe learning doesn’t have to end when school is out and that learning can be FUN, that is why we created this series for our kids. We encourage you to follow along! The beauty of our series is that we think it should be easy for you as a parent. I know when I try to go too crazy with an idea I get burned out and I’m done. This is something that can be as easy as reading books on the weekly theme or coloring pictures printed from the internet. Make it easy and fun so both you and your child have a good time!
National List of Trains
Here is a national list of trains from the National Railway Historic Society in the USA to help you search if you decide you want to go find one.
I came across the most amazing blog when searching for ideas for train activities called Play Trains, a blog written by a cute girl named Jessica and the entire site is dedicated to train activities! Talk about the mecca for train fun! I loved this idea of making a tree out of train tracks. I have tracks just like this that you can find from IKEA.
Because it is Summer I am loving her idea on pool noodle train tracks! I think my kids would be in heaven if we did this activity with it being Summer and very hot!
With Fall just around the corner you could hold onto this idea and save your pumpkins for a fun train activity before you carve them out for Halloween!
Looking for some glow in the dark fun? This would be so much fun to do late one night either inside or outside in the Summer!
I stumbled upon this darling “make your own train” idea on Wants and Wishes! This looks like an amazing sweet treat that your kids would absolutely love!
dying over the cute building pieces. If you are looking for something a little more simple you could build a candy train that you see around Christmas time. You could also take this idea and make it a little bit healthier by building the train with fruits and vegetables!
Here are some fun books you can use that we love:
Books on Trains:
Movies with Trains:
One of my absolute favorite movies that features a train is the Harry Potter Series:
If you are a member of Amazon Prime you can actually stream Thomas the Train series for free!
It may not be Christmas time but you could watch the Polar Express, which in my opinion is a classic. Wrap up in blankets and drink hot coa coa and for fun you could pretend like it is cold outside! 🙂 This also streams for free on through Amazon Prime.
These are just a few ideas to get you started! We will share what we did on Friday like always! Don’t forget to use the hashtag #MMSsummerlearningseries to share with us what you’re doing, we would love to see! We will probably be visiting the train at Lagoon or maybe even go up to Heber to try out their historic train rides!
Fruit Train Snack
Check out how to make these adorable and healthy fruit trains! They are super fun to put together and the options are unlimited!
Of course, no train theme is complete without a ride on a train. Trains are all over the place, I’m sure you can find one close to you.
We also stopped at an adorable little model train museum.
