Train Activities for Kids

This summer learning series is all about train activities for kids. From train crafts to toys and snacks, make learning about trains fun and exciting!

Train Activities for Kids

We hope we give you some fun ideas of things to do with your kids this summer with our Summer Learning series. We believe learning doesn’t have to end when school is out and that learning can be FUN, that is why we created this series for our kids.

Kids love to see a train go by when we are stopped at the train tracks. My kids get so excited and love to make that choo choo sound! It will forever be a sweet memory of raising my kids.

This summer learning series is all about trains. Check out all of the fun train ideas to do with your kids. Pick and choose and most importantly, have fun doing it. There are so many ways to explore trains as they are one of the oldest forms of transportation and no matter where you live you should be able to find a train to visit or ride!

National List of Trains

Visiting a real train is a great train activity for kids. Here is a national list of trains from the National Railway Historic Society in the USA to help you search if you decide you want to go find one.

Tree out of Train Tracks

I came across the most amazing blog when searching for ideas for train activities for kids called Play Trains. This blog is written by a cute girl named Jessica and the entire site is dedicated to train activities! Talk about the mecca for train fun! I loved this idea of making a tree out of train tracks. I have tracks just like this that you can find from IKEA.

Pool Noodle Train Tracks

Because it is Summer I am loving this train activity for kids on pool noodle train tracks! I think my kids would be in heaven if we did this idea with it being summer and very hot!

Tracks around Pumpkins

With Fall just around the corner you could hold onto this idea and save your pumpkins for a fun train activity before you carve them out for Halloween!

Books on Trains:

Here are some fun books you can use that we love:

Movies with Trains:

One of my absolute favorite movies that features a train is the Harry Potter Series:

If you are a member of Amazon Prime you can actually stream Thomas the Train series for free!

It may not be Christmas time but you could watch the Polar Express, which in my opinion is a classic. Wrap up in blankets and drink hot coa coa and for fun you could pretend like it is cold outside! 🙂 This also streams for free on through Amazon Prime.

These are just a few ideas to get you started! We will probably be visiting the train at Lagoon or maybe even go up to Heber to try out their historic train rides!

Take a Real Train Ride!

Of course, no train theme is complete without a ride on a train. Trains are all over the place, I’m sure you can find one close to you.

Visit a Train Museum

Find a model train museum as a fun afternoon activity. The kids loved looking at all of the pictures and seeing parts of the train up close.
