Hey Cass;

I just thought I’d let you know how often Whitney and I laughed while reading this post. It’s amazing how true it is that the more you spend time with that one person you love the more funny and fulfilling life gets. Yesterday Whit and I went on a walk with Jet being dragged behind us on a sled. He was wailing the whole time but that and all the other countless times we’re doing things together, even if we’re fighting or Jet’s crying it makes life all that much sweeter.

Just thought I’d let you know how much we agree.

you may have already covered your chairs but I am about to do a similar project and did not want the plastic either. With 4 kids I needed some stain resistance. I bought oil cloth. It comes in a ton of print options, not too expensive but can wipe clean!!

I love it! I’m going to greywash my table in a few weeks and this is exactly how i’d like it to look. I have just a few questions. So you said you painted the table the grey (looks like its a relatively light grey)with a few coats with a roller then the next thing you say is about the trick to drybrushing…was that with the same grey for the first, solid coats? As for the glaze, do you tell them how much black to add or do you just say you want black added and they just do it? Thanks so much! I hope mine turns out half as good as yours did!ReplyCancel

  It has held up really well! I have had a couple instances when the paint was fresher that I didn’t remove a cereal bowl with milk below it that became stuck and pulled little bits of the paint. 🙁 so when the paint is new-ish keep an eye on that.
  
  The glaze was mixed with black paint and was actually left over from a neighbors project. To the eye it looked pretty black though. The white wash was actually using white paint mixed with water once my grey coats had dried. I still love it! I hope I answered all of your questions!

I recently glazed some of our cabinets with an antiquing glaze that Lowes sells by Valspar that worked great. They ended up looking very similar to what you have here.
How did you decide what finish to go with? What are the qualities of it? I originally tried a lacquer on an area of my cabinets that yellowed the area (painted white) that had to be redone. I’m fairly new to artistic painting with furniture, especially with holding around little hands and accidents :).ReplyCancel

  I wanted something that looked “beachy” and was hoping that there would be some grain wood underneath when I sanded the table down because it is is a great table. I was shocked to find that it was a composite wood with no grain! That is why I used this hand brush technique to mimic what wood grain stained would look like.
  So far I’ve had no yellowing and until I can get a new table I just keep changing up this old one! 🙂
  I kind of just made this up and applied different bits I had learned from reading other tutorials online. And yes, little hands can get in the way sometimes!ReplyCancel

This is absolutely stunning! And I couldn’t have found it at a better time…..I have just stripped down my kitchen table and am going to do this finish on it.

I did have some questions though…did you paint it all gray first, then whitewash, then glaze?

Also…..was the whitewash white paint and water or gray paint and water.

Again, thanks so much. I had no idea what to do with this table as once stripped I realized it wouldn’t be able to be stained due to permanent markings in the wood. Now you made the fact it would have to be painted exciting!ReplyCancel

  Yeah! I am glad you like it! To answer your questions 1. Yes, I did paint the whole table grey first, white washed second, glazed last and then put on the protective coat.

Thanks so much. I will try to get the before and after pictures up somewhere. I am not very 21st century but I do have facebook….just haven’t been on it in months and certainly not enough to know how to put pics up!!! I will try and figure it out!

I did have one other question and then I’ll try not to fill up the whole cmments section with my nervous nellie questions!……Was the grey light, medium, or dark in shade? I am also thinking of doing this in a taupe type of color but am still undecided……what is your opinion of that color option for this style of finish?

  I was lucky enough to find a gray that I liked we’ll enough in the “oops” section of already made paint which cut on the cost. It was a medium gray. If you want to make it lighter you can always make your white wash thicker with another coat.
  
  Taupe would be really pretty too! I already had a lot of cream in my kitchen so I wanted something a little different. I am painting my chairs white but haven’t gotten to it yet. (Pregnancy has slowed down my painting lately.)

  I want to say it was somewhere in between. Honestly, it doesn’t matter much because one you do the top coat and the protective coat you can choose the finish you would like. I would suggest leaning more towards gloss because it is easier to clean!ReplyCancel
