Aren’t elephants such beautiful and amazing creatures? From their long trucks and big ears to the sheer size of them, I’ve always found them fascinating! My kids and I have been studying African animals this month, and of course, we had to make an elephant craft!

The inspiration behind this Newspaper Elephant craft is based on one of our favorite books, “Old Mikamba had a Farm” by Rachel Isadora. This book is an African animal take on the classic “Old MacDonald Had a Farm”. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and so creative!

This Newspaper Elephant Craft is such an easy and fun way to replicate the one created in “Old Mikamba had a Farm.” I love being able to repurpose old newspapers for art projects!

What you’ll need for this Newspaper Elephant Craft

  • White paper
  • Printable (free download below)
  • Newspaper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Black marker/Sharpie

To create your very own Newspaper Elephant Craft, follow the steps below.

  1. Print out the printable or draw out an elephant outline on your own.

2. Cut out the outline with scissors and set aside.

3. Cut varying sizes of newspaper.

4. Glue enough newspaper clippings on to the elephant cutout to cover it up.

5. Glue the elephant onto a white sheet of paper.

6. Use a black marker or Sharpie to trace around the elephant outline. Next, add the eye and lines for the ear.

7. You can use extra newspaper clippings to add small rocks as part of the background. Get creative!
