5 reasons to take your family fishing

We just moved to Alaska about five months ago. It has been fun getting to know our new state and we have been trying to explore as much of it as we can.

Here is a fun bit of trivia about Alaska: there are 3 million lakes here! You read that right. I said 3 million! So as we explore our new state fishing is just a given. We are always near a lake. It’s a good thing fishing is so fun to do as a family because we always have something to do when we are itching to get outside for a bit.

We recently headed out fishing with our Shakespeare rods and spent the evening fishing as a family. I will give you reasons why taking your family fishing is so great below, but let me tell you a little about our fishing experience first. All three of my kids had so much fun, in fact they are begging to go again already. It was great to spend a whole evening with my family in the outdoors with no mention of Minecraft at all. (Please tell me I’m not the only one who has to listen to Minecraft talk nonstop!?)

I loved the Shakespeare Catch More Fish Youth fishing combo for my kids because it came with everything we needed for the day at the lake. We were completely set and didn’t need to stop to get any additional supplies. The combo comes with a Shakespeare rod and reel, Stren fishing line and a little tackle box full of hooks, bobbers, and bait from Berkley and Powerbait. The fishing pole was the perfect size for each kid which meant I didn’t have to help prop poles or reel anything in for them. They could do it all on their own.

The Shakespeare youth rod is also super easy to cast. My boys got the hang of it rather quickly and spent a lot of time practicing their cast. We could tell a huge difference in their technique and distance by the end of our trip. It makes it a lot more relaxing when the kids can cast all on their own and they feel pretty cool too. I highly recommend the Shakespeare Catch More Fish Combo if you have kids, it will make your fishing experience so much easier. Find the youth kit here. You can also find lake and pond kits. Or lady fish combos.

Before you head out here is a great fishing checklist and outdoor tips to get you started.

Now here are reasons why you should take your family fishing:

1. Great activity for the whole family:

It doesn’t matter if you’re old or young, a boy or a girl. Fishing is a fun activity for the whole family. It doesn’t even matter if you’re a fishing novice or a fishing expert, you’ll catch on quickly and have fun learning something with your family in the meantime.

2. Great way to bond:

Getting out and spending time with your kids is one of the best ways to create lasting relationships. Quality time makes your child feel special and loved and those strong bonds will help your child through their life. There are many ways to get out and play with your child and fishing is one.

3. Create Family Memories

Some of my favorite memories growing up are fishing with my family. I know my husband will cherish the memories he has fishing with his dad and grandpa. Being in the outdoors with your family is a great way to create lasting memories.

fishing 24. Teach your kids patience

Fishing is a lot of fun, but it does take a little patience. If you reel in too fast, you might miss a fish. If you get frustrated and yell, you’re going to scare the fish. You might get to your favorite fishing spot and it takes a few tries to find out what the fish are biting AND sometimes you might not even catch a fish. You’re teaching your child patience without saying anything at all.

5. Great way to unplug

Fishing is exciting and challenging and sometimes like a puzzle you have to figure out – just like a video game, but you are outdoors instead of staring at a screen. Get away from the video games, iPads, phones and other distractions and enjoy the quite for a little bit.
