I am thrilled to let you know that pre-registration for UPSTART preschool in Utah is now open! UPSTART is a free online preschool that is designed to help your child prepare for Kindergarten. I used the program for my oldest son who is now is second grade and can say with certainty that it made all of the difference in his preparation for entering school. When I was approached by UPSTART and Mom it Forward to be compensated to share this information with you I had no hesitation because this is a program that we LOVE! In fact, I have already shared my love for this program on multiple occasions!
I have known people who have used UPSTART as their primary/only source of preschool for Kindergarten and have had great success. I have decided for my children that I would still like them to be in a preschool in person for the interaction with other children and learning how to follow directions, raise their hand, and feel some independence outside of the home before going to school.
When my son started the program he knew few letters, some numbers, and no letter sounds. I was so thankful to my friend when she introduced me to this program because I felt like the year of preschool he had already done didn’t result in a lot of “academic” learning. That was okay, he was still young, but I really wanted him to be in a place of confidence entering kindergarten and love for reading. By the time he finished the UPSTART program he knew most of the letters, a lot of numbers, and was putting the sounds of the letters together to begin reading on his own. The most important thing to me was that he walked away from the program loving to learn and feeling like he had the confidence to continue. What is REALLY cool is a lot of kids are reading quite fluently by the time they are done!
UPSTART focuses primarily on reading, but also teaching mathematics and science. Each child that enters the program is assessed on an individual basis so that as they progress the program knows whether or not they have mastered a skill or there needs to be a little more time spent in that area. The program offers up to a 2nd grade level, so your child could master skills well beyond kindergarten prep and that is really exciting!
My daughter is now 4 and just started her own prep with UPSTART! She was so excited to do the same program! UPSTART is available to everyone, but the registration is a first come first serve basis. I will admit that as soon as my child is born I make sure their immunizations, records, social security is in line….and I make sure they are on the wait list for UPSTART. Okay, I know that sounds crazy, because really? YES! I really have registered my children as soon as possible as soon as I found out about it and experienced it.
UPSTART is a non-profit organization in Utah and with its success is getting more and more funding from the state each year. I would love nothing more than for this program to be available to everyone, and UPSTART is doing its best to get more funding and it is continuing to grow! A primary focus of the UPSTART program is to help people who may not otherwise be able to afford a preschool program. There are even sponsorships’ available to give families access to a computer for their home during the year of the program and the program is offered to families who speak Spanish and English with online assistance as well.
“UPSTART uses Waterford Institute’s award-winning software and contains thousands of educational
songs, books and lessons to teach reading, math and science. Each child is given unique, individualized
lessons based on their skill level and learning style.”
My kids have loved doing UPSTART. It is required that your child does 15 minutes a day, 5 times a week, but I have always found that my kids want to play longer! If you have other children who are interested in learning on the program as well they can join in as well! Jackson hasn’t been putting stickers up every day, but I don’t watch his progress as strictly because he has his own homework.
One thing that has been helpful for us is to buy a little timer so that Jayne can keep track of her 15 minutes. We usually do 20-25, but only 15 minutes is required to be deemed “active” in the program. We loved this PENGUIN TIMER or this LADY BUG TIMER, the kids think they are a lot of fun.
Making a progress chart like this makes it a really fun way to let your children see the progress they have made as they learn. UPSTART will send a gold/silver/bronze badge sticker as well in the mail once a month for the their participation.
The program has proven that for just 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week, children can become kindergarten
ready. In fact, most children graduate from UPSTART already at an advanced kindergarten level.
Over 15% of Utah preschoolers use UPSTART, and in a 2013 study, external evaluators found that kids
using UPSTART have 2-3x higher learning rates than those who don’t use the program.
