I have been trying to use less plastic in our house and waste less. When we moved to Alaska we quickly discovered we had to take our own trash to the dump they have here in town. It was really eye opening to me to see how much trash we throw in those dumpsters each week! Since moving here a recycling center opened and it has been wonderful to see how big of an impact that has made on the amount of stuff we are sending to the landfill. We still aren’t perfect, but we are aware and we are working on it.

One thing I did was switch out buying plastic straws. We drink a lot of smoothies and protein shakes and all of my kids prefer them with a straw. 3-4 straws thrown in our trash every day doesn’t seem like a lot, but in the long run it really does add up. On average each person in the United States uses 1.6 straws per day. That ends up being 500 million single use plastic straws thrown away EACH DAY! I know they’re tiny and we could focus on something bigger, but can you imagine being in a room with 500 million straws. That is overwhelming to think about. I really love that there has been a recent push for reusable straws.

The best reusable straws:

Stainless steel straws

These are the first straws we bought and I really like them, but I will admit they take a little time to get used to. If you’re used to plastic the stainless steal can feel hard and cold. But they get the job done and they are easy to clean. They come with two cleaning brushes that work great.

Stainless steel straws with silicone tips

These ones are actually my favorites. If you’re curious about reusable straws this is a great package to buy first because the silicone tip feels more like drinking out of the straws you’re used to without being a one and done plastic. These are also easy to clean, which is a huge bonus for a reusable product.

Collapsable reusable stainless steel straw with case

These are wonderful for on the go straw use. If you’re going to a restaurant you can use this instead of one of the plastic straws there. Keep one in your purse for easy access. I’ve seen some that have a carrier that is actually a keychain, but I’m not as familiar with those as I am with these.

Stainless steel straws with wooden travel cases

I actually don’t own these straws, but liked that it was another option for a straw on the go. These come with travel cases to keep them clean in your purse and ready for use.

BPA free silicone straws

My kids love these straws and so far they have lasted a really long time. I do love the fun colors of these straws and I love how big and fat they are. They are perfect for smoothies because of the wide opening they have.

Reusable bamboo straws

I haven’t bought these bamboo straws, so I don’t have experience with their quality or how they feel in the mouth, but I wanted to add one more option that wasn’t stainless steal or silicone. These are non-toxic, reusable AND biodegradable, which I love.
