How to clean a reusable straw

how to clean a reusable straw

So I was doing my dishes last night and trying everything in my power to get my son’s thermos straw clean. He had milk at school in his thermos and then left his backpack in the car all weekend and it was really gross. I almost gave up and threw it away when I had a moment. I wouldn’t call it an “aha moment” exactly, it was more like a “duh! Why didn’t I think of this earlier” moment.

All you do is add a little bit of dish soap to a pipe cleaner and push it through the straw. Then rinse.

That’s it!! Seriously, why haven’t I done this before!?

Hope this helps someone out there! 🙂

Edit:
I wrote this tip five years ago in 2013! This trick has helped me many times over the years, but as reusable straws become more popular it’s also getting easier to find straw cleaning brushes online! I keep them with my other dish scrubs near my sink for easy access. They work like a charm!

  • Perfect! I usually put a dab of dish soap inside the straw and put some water in it, plug the holes, and swish the water inside lol (sounds more complicated, I know!) Can’t wait to try this tactic! Although… I will need to buy some pipe cleaners. lolReplyCancel

I have totally been doing the soap/water/swish method for awhile, but I could never get my smoothie straws clean. Smoothie straws are the worst! I hope you try this, it’s way easier than swishing…not that there’s anything wrong with swishing. 🙂ReplyCancel

Yes. I have done that before, too. Then, I bought an actual straw cleaner at target, I believe. Inexpensive, sturdy, bristles are strong and scrub very well, has a little handle and I have it hooked up by the sink. We all in our house have personal waterbottles with straws and with our daily smoothies and juicing so it comes in very handy everyday.ReplyCancel
