Green smoothies

We love green smoothies at my house! They are super easy to make and they are good for you, but the best part is they taste good too! My boys love when they see me pull out the blender because they know they are about to have a tasty smoothie. I usually don’t measure my ingredients, I like to throw whatever I have into the blender and then drink it, but I measured this one so I could write down a recipe for you.

Because I add berries to my smoothies they turn out looking more brown than green. I realize this, so don’t think I’m crazy. 🙂

Melissa’s Green Smoothie

2 cups of berries (I used half strawberry and blackberry)

1 cup fresh pineapple chunks

1 banana

2 cups spinach

1 cup kale

1-2 cups water

*I use frozen berries so I don’t add ice, but if you use fresh fruit add some ice*

Add everything to your blender and blend it together. Add a lid first, of course.

This made about 5 1/2 cups of smoothie. I usually drink about 2 cups of smoothie at a time, so this was enough for 2 big smoothies and then 2 small ones for my boys.

There are about 11 grams of fiber in 2 cups of this smoothie! It is so good for you.

So here are a few tips if you want to get into smoothie making.

#1: Buy berries on sale and then freeze them.
My freezer is full of raspberries, blueberries, strawberries and blackberries. I buy them in the summer when they are cheap and then I can use them for my smoothies. I also like adding some sort of frozen fruit to my smoothie because then I don’t have to add ice. I have also frozen bananas, peaches, pineapple and cantaloupe.

#2: Mix up your greens.
The flavor of spinach is easily hidden with fruit, but don’t always grab a handful of it. Branch out and try new leafy greens. Swiss chard, kale, collard greens and romaine lettuce are all awesome.

#3: Mix up your fruit too.
Try different combinations of fruit and veggies to make things interesting and to get a wide variety of nutrients. In the winter I love to add a few oranges because they are on sale and the extra vitamin C is always nice during cold and flu season. I love to add fresh peaches, grapes, watermelon, apples, pears…seriously whatever I have sitting around. I even like to add avocado, it adds creaminess, good fats and potassium. The possibilities are endless! 🙂

#4: Add a banana.

I almost always add a banana to whatever smoothie I’m making. They are an easy way to add sweetness and they add a nice creamy texture.

#5: Blend and freeze your leafy greens.

I always buy those 3 pound bags of spinach from Costco. Even with all the smoothie making we do I can never make it through an entire bag of it. If you have some leafy greens that you aren’t going to use fast enough put them all in your blender, add some water, and then pour them into ice trays like this:

Then freeze them and you have spinach cubes you can add to your smoothie any time without having to worry that they will go bad!

  • We love green smoothies too. They are the absolute only way I can get fruits and veggies into my uber-picky 7 year old.

Thanks for the tip about spinach cubes. I’m always throwing out bad spinach– or leaving the spinach out of our smoothies because we ran out. Spinach cubes are brilliant!!ReplyCancel

Great tip about the spinach cubes! I have just frozen the whole bag before (in leaf form), because I figure I am only using it for smoothies.ReplyCancel

Luv the frozen spinach hint! I hate it when the greens go bad before I can use them! I freeze all my fruits but never thought of the veggies!ReplyCancel

Love green smoothies. I used to do the frozen cubes for baby food as well. Blend up a bunch of sweet potatoes, peas, quinoa, etc. and label each bag. Then, I could easily thaw as many food cubes as I needed as well as mix and match a couple different ones together for different combinations. 🙂ReplyCancel

Love the smoothie! Making another batch today and then freezing the rest of my spinach and kale! Thanks!

How much water should I add to the spinach or greens?ReplyCancel

I’m glad you like the smoothie! I start out with just a little water, maybe 1/4 cup and start blending. Then add a few tablespoons at a time until it’s blending easily. It all depends on how much spinach or kale you have in the blender. Good luck!ReplyCancel

Great tip about the spinach…I have the same problem of not being able to use up the entire bag. Quick question, after freezing the spinach in the ice trays do you transfer them to another container like a tupperware with a cover?ReplyCancel

    • Melissa Hadfield

Yes, I put my frozen spinach cubes in a zip lock bag, I haven’t ever tried tupperware, but I’m sure that would work as well.ReplyCancel

When bananas are on sale I buy several bunches. I peel them and but them into thirds the perfect size to add to my smoothie… Next I put all the pieces on a small plater and put it int he freezer. once the bananas are froozen i store them in plactic freezer bags till needed. TIP froozen bananas are an awsome snack they taste better than popscicles and better for you too just slice em and enjoyReplyCancel

You don’t have to blend your greens to freeze them, I freeze my fresh greens in zipper bags; collards, kale, mustard greens, spinach, chard, whatever, they go right in the freezer when I bring them home.
Here’s how…If they’re fresh from the produce section I wash them in the sink with water then let them dry off a little in a colander – put them in bags and freeze. If I buy the pre-washed, pre-packaged type, I put them right in the freezer in the bag they come in. I’ve done this for years after having the same experience with greens going bad before I could use them up.
    Hope this helps you all!
