We love green smoothies at my house! They are super easy to make and they are good for you, but the best part is they taste good too! My boys love when they see me pull out the blender because they know they are about to have a tasty smoothie. I usually don’t measure my ingredients, I like to throw whatever I have into the blender and then drink it, but I measured this one so I could write down a recipe for you.
Because I add berries to my smoothies they turn out looking more brown than green. I realize this, so don’t think I’m crazy. 🙂
Melissa’s Green Smoothie
2 cups of berries (I used half strawberry and blackberry)
1 cup fresh pineapple chunks
2 cups spinach
1 cup kale
1-2 cups water
*I use frozen berries so I don’t add ice, but if you use fresh fruit add some ice*
Add everything to your blender and blend it together. Add a lid first, of course.
This made about 5 1/2 cups of smoothie. I usually drink about 2 cups of smoothie at a time, so this was enough for 2 big smoothies and then 2 small ones for my boys.
There are about 11 grams of fiber in 2 cups of this smoothie! It is so good for you.
So here are a few tips if you want to get into smoothie making.
#1: Buy berries on sale and then freeze them.
My freezer is full of raspberries, blueberries, strawberries and blackberries. I buy them in the summer when they are cheap and then I can use them for my smoothies. I also like adding some sort of frozen fruit to my smoothie because then I don’t have to add ice. I have also frozen bananas, peaches, pineapple and cantaloupe.
#2: Mix up your greens.
The flavor of spinach is easily hidden with fruit, but don’t always grab a handful of it. Branch out and try new leafy greens. Swiss chard, kale, collard greens and romaine lettuce are all awesome.
#3: Mix up your fruit too.
Try different combinations of fruit and veggies to make things interesting and to get a wide variety of nutrients. In the winter I love to add a few oranges because they are on sale and the extra vitamin C is always nice during cold and flu season. I love to add fresh peaches, grapes, watermelon, apples, pears…seriously whatever I have sitting around. I even like to add avocado, it adds creaminess, good fats and potassium. The possibilities are endless! 🙂
#4: Add a banana.
I almost always add a banana to whatever smoothie I’m making. They are an easy way to add sweetness and they add a nice creamy texture.
#5: Blend and freeze your leafy greens.
I always buy those 3 pound bags of spinach from Costco. Even with all the smoothie making we do I can never make it through an entire bag of it. If you have some leafy greens that you aren’t going to use fast enough put them all in your blender, add some water, and then pour them into ice trays like this:
Then freeze them and you have spinach cubes you can add to your smoothie any time without having to worry that they will go bad!
