Christmas Traditions

When I was first married I remember borrowing a book from the library about traditions. There was something in the book for any holiday you can imagine. I went through the entire thing and picked out something I wanted to do for our family. I think Paul went along with it just to make me happy but thought maybe a birthday cake for presidents on president’s day was a little much. A lot of the traditions that I wrote down have been forgotten.

One thing that I hope to pass down to my own children is to have music be an integral part of the Christmas Season and spirit. It my home growing up we all grew a deep love for music and the spirit that comes with it. Whether it was listening to Steve Miller Band as we flew across Lake Powell or Christmas Carols as we remember the reason for the season. We also like to use music as a way to laugh and have fun.

One of my most favorite traditions is my family’s talent night. We do this for Christmas and each family prepares a sit, song, dance, or joke to share with the family. Truly this has been something we look forward to the most to see what crazy haired idea someone has come up with. In fact, one of the years that no one came up with something to perform my Dad offered $20 to the first person to jump up and do something. So although at the time I was 38 weeks pregnant I jumped up and did my best delivery of “My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard.” I was huge and it was hilarious. What was even better was that my older brother jumped up and followed suit.

We’ve had skits from Saturday Night Live, lip-syncs from classic Christmas favorites, dances, and songs that will never be forgotten. So if there is one tradition I could pass on to my family it would have to be music in all its forms. To be silly and also to be serious. The spirit of the Lord never shines so bright as it does when I am communicating with my Father in Heaven through music.

What is your favorite tradition?

Oh, Camille – I wholeheartedly agree!! Music not only binds us at the holiday, but throughout our lives. My children spontaneously will sing songs I taught them – even 20 or 30 years later. Heidi called once from a staff meeting and asked me to sing, “Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel”. Angela texted me once during a breakdown and said, “Mother, I love you, Mother I do”
Last night she sang the song, “I Love to See the Temple” without skipping a word. Lovely post.

One of my favorite traditions was on Dec 1st putting a Christmas pillowcase on all the pillows. So easy to make. The bolt is as long as the pillow, so just a yard for each pillow. Very fun!ReplyCancel
