7 Steps To Create Balance In Your Life

Today we are pleased to welcome a friend, Tina Metcalf, who is a life coach and has a lot of wonderful ideas of ways to get your life in check. Things can get a little crazy around the holiday season, so I thought this was a perfect time to take a moment to “balance” everything we are juggling as women, mothers, wives, employees, and friends. Enjoy! ~Camille

Do you ever feel like the word “balance” is a foreign word in your world? Do you feel like you are rushing from one task, appointment, meeting, chore, activity to the next with no time to spare, if not running late?

Finding balance in an overly planned life can seem like an impossible task. Most people want to have a greater sense of balance when it comes to their lives, but do not know how to achieve it. There are certain things you can do to support bringing more balance into your life.

Here are 7 areas to begin focusing on and making a conscious effort to improve.

1. Breakfast is for Champions.

I’m sure it’s not news to you to hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but are you taking the time to eat breakfast? Your eating habits are a crucial part in creating and keeping a balanced life. Choose every day to give your body the nourishment it needs to function and fuel you through the day.

2. Joyful Movement.

Part of being balanced is exercising and toning your body. So many people feel like it has to be a 60 minute, hard core, sweating your guts out work out or else it doesn’t count. If you fall into this stinkin’ thinkin’ idea then I encourage you to reconsider. It doesn’t have to be an all or nothing approach to exercise. That is why I like to use the word “joyful movement” Take a walk, go for a bike ride around the block, dance to your favorite song etc. Joyful Movement can relieve stress and lift your attitude. It also strengthens your body to do necessary tasks, and creates more balance in your life.

3. “No” is NOT a 4 letter word.

I promise everyone is going to survive if you tell them no. They might not like it and it might be an unfamiliar word for you but you will be amazed at the balance you can create in your life by choosing to say no to the things that aren’t on your top priority list. Most of us have too much going on and struggle to decline requests from others. If this is a challenge for you, review your schedule and set limits on how much time you and your children spend on outside obligation. With each invitation or opportunity ask yourself, “On a scale of 1-10 how badly do I want to participate in this?” If it’s not at least an 8, nicely decline.

4. Get your beauty sleep.

Sleeping allows your body to recharge after a full day. In order to wake up refreshed and prepared to face the next day, you deserve to let your body repair with good sleep. Even if you have to write it into your schedule, aim for at least seven hours a night.

5. Make time for you.

Being caught up with work and family leaves us little time to unwind. Even 10 minutes a day of time spent just on yourself can help keep your body and mind balanced. A good goal to reach would be at least 30 minutes a day of uninterrupted “you time.”

6. Appreciate what is around you.

Negativity is everywhere, from co-workers and kid complaints, the news (I’m so glad the elections are over!) and other media. Take time to notice and embrace the good things around you and focus on as many positive things as you can. Take on the challenge of finding the “Good New” in every situation. Keeping a gratitude journal will assist to keep you mentally and emotionally balanced.

7. What do you want?

Prioritize what means the most to you. Your idea of a balanced life may look completely different than someone else’s idea of balanced. Take some time today to write about what your ideal day looks like. Then notice what you get to change and where you get to put more of your focus and energy to make you feel complete and secure and balanced.

Create a game plan. Make a list of what you will do (or no longer do) and by when you will take action.
