Monitoring Kid’s Screen Time with the New Fire Kids Edition tablet and Special Discount Code!

Technology is everywhere, monitoring kid’s screen time has become harder than ever. It is such a blessing to be a parent in this day and age with all of the advances and conveniences that we enjoy, but it also comes with new challenges our parents and their parents would never even have thought about. I’ll admit that there have been times that I have been so grateful for a mini screen in so many different situations. We just came back from a long road trip and made sure we had some type of screen for the kids to be able to play with as it saved us from miles of fighting and “are we there yet?” I have also loved having a device at a doctors office, at a restaurant, in the grocery store, or as a very needed distraction mid melt-down…I won’t say if it was mine or theirs. 😉  The only trick has been keeping that screen time in check and also keeping my phone at times when I really need it. I’ve also been concerned about what my child might see when innocently searching for a Minecraft video on youtube and worrying what they might see.

  • 5 Ways to Monitor Your Kid’s Screen Time:

  1. Set up a routine of things that happen BEFORE screen time happens. My kids and I came up with a list of things they need to get done BEFORE “tech time” or “screen time” begins. I had them be a part of this process so that when the time comes they know this is the list they came up with too. We are talking simple things: get dressed, make your bed, brush your teeth, read, chore, room clean, and at least 30 minutes of outdoor/creative play. For our family it is best if tech time happens in the early afternoon after lunch when the younger children go down for their naps. 2. Let them get bored. I used to be worried about my kids “being bored” and would think up activities and games for them to try. Some days I would even put together a schedule of ideas of what we would do together. While I do have days that are scheduled for us with activities for us to do as a family I realized that I was hindering their opportunity to use their BRAINS and their imaginations. A friend of mine said it is normal for her kids to be “brain dead” for a time after they come out of the “screen time coma”, typically about half of the time they watched TV or played a game. So, say they watched TV for 60 minutes, it may take them 30 minutes before their brains start working to a point where they can start playing and coming up with ways to entertain themselves. Now if my kids tell me they are bored I respond with, “Good! Now you get a chance to use your brain and come up with something fun to do!” They don’t like it when I say that but it gets the point across!
  3. Use the new Fire Kids Edition Tablet to do the thinking for you.  Something that I love about the new Fire Kids Edition Table (click here for 20% off discount code.) There are so many things I love about this tablet, but the #1 feature I love is being able to limit the screen time right in the device itself. You can set up multiple accounts on one device setting the name, gender, parent controls, and time limits. You can even set the play time to come after a required reading/educational time. I was so pleased to find that my son’s favorite books “Big Nate” were available because we have been on waiting lists at the library  for weeks to get these books!
  4. Make play time mandatory. Make play time a priority. I’m talking the kind of play that just happens. Try not to get schedules so full that there isn’t time available for discovery and free play. My kids seem to have the most fun when play just happens and most often it involves nothing special other than time. Make imaginative play fun with these ideas to jump start their imagination.
  5. Practice what you preach. Kids will always respond best when they see us doing what we are asking them to do. As a parent I have never seen this more evident than when I ask them to work or when I ask them to limit their screen time. Because they see me on my phone/computer on a pretty regular basis I know that I have to be careful about my screen time too.

I love that by having  the new Fire Kids Edition Tablet I know my kids are safe as they search through games, apps, and books. With each tablet you receive a kid-proof case, a two year guarantee for replacement if anything happens to it, no questions asked, and over 10,000 kids books, movies, games, and apps and educational content from PBS Kids, Nickelodeon, Disney, and more.

You can also add even more content to your child’s profile in Free Time to give them selected access to apps in your personal library, such as Netflix, YouTube, and Minecraft.  (If you purchase an app in the parent controlled section you can give them access to it as well.)

Looking for a way to connect over a book, game, or app? There are even discussion cards available for you to connect with your kids and learn what the zombies in Minecraft are really all about!
