Cricut Explore Air 2 Tips and Tricks: A Beginner’s Guide

I have been using the Cricut Explore Air 2 machine for a couple of months now and I’ve been having so much fun learning about this amazing too. I wanted to put together a beginner’s guide to Cricut because there are a lot of things that I wanted to know when first using my machine.

I am learning more and more that there are so many things that his machine can do! So far I have cut vinyl for a fun diaper pail project, created a birthday banner, and even made a onesie!

The very best feature about the new Cricut Explore 2 is it’s ability to communicate with Cricut’s new app!

You can upload, design, and export everything you need right to your machine. I love being able to do something right from my phone and not having to worry about having my computer with me when inspiration strikes. With that said, it can be easier in some ways when you have a mouse to work with, but if I had to pick I would go with my phone every single time.

The Cricut Explore Air and the Cricut Explore Air 2 offers wireless cutting, writing, and scoring with built-in Bluetooth®.

Upload your own image.

You can upload your own design, font, and ideas right to your own design space. I love to use Picmonkey online because it is free and so easy to use. Of course, you can use other design apps that are more advanced, but if you want to try your hand at some design this is a great place to start.

If you want you don’t want to create your own image you can use the Cricut image library and find the perfect image for your project.  Cricut offers more than 60,000 images starting at just 99 cents.

Write with your Cricut Explore Air 2. I LOVE this feature.

If you have some fancy invitations or even a quote or saying you want to make as a display in your home or a gift this is feature is amazing and so unique to Cricut.

Keeping your mats clean.

Your machine will come with a cutting mat. Make sure you are clearing your every time you use it and re-covering it with the plastic cover that comes with the mat. If you are in need of giving it a little boost you can wash it with water and mild soap, leaving it out to dry. Another short cut for a mat that is no longer sticky is to use painters tap or washi tape to hold your project in place as the machine cuts.

Use Cricut.com as a resource for everything you need. There are so many youtube videos and project tips available right on the website. If you are feeling like you need even more help search for tutorials on Pinterest or google and you will find a bunch. My favorite step by step guide is here.

Keep Your blades sharp.

It is a good idea to keep your blades separate and used for each different material that it is appropriate for. A good idea might be to mark each blade by category using washi tape or fingernail polish.

Cricut Access.

You have probably discovered pretty quickly that most of the options available on Cricut will cost a few dollars to use. If you plan to use different fonts and like to work on a few projects a month you will definitely want to consider subscribing to Cricut Access. I found that only have a few font choices I was already at the cost of the premium access. One thing to keep in mind is that when you subscribe to this service all of your purchases will stay in your account. No need to worry about cartridges! If you cancel your subscription you will lose access to these features.

If you find a font that you love and use all the time, you may just want to buy that font and move along not worrying about the subscription, the choice is up to you.

Practice Cut.

The new Cricut Air 2 machine is smarter than ever and can adjust to your needs with the twist of the knob. While this is incredible, it doesn’t account for user error. Ha ha! I had to practice a few times just to figure out which way I should lay the vinyl or the fabric of the project I am working on. If you are using a limited amount of a material in your collection you may want to have some scrap materials that are the same thickness so you can have a whoops and not cry yourself to sleep that night.
