Time saving tips for busy moms and busier mornings.
Maybe the baby kept you up half of the night or you got a little wrapped up in watching the 7th season of your favorite show on Netflix, or you simply slept in. Rushed mornings can be the start of a really long day as a mom. Ahhhhh! Don’t panic! I’ve been there, more than I’d like to admit, but through that experience I have some time saving tips to help you get your day back on track.
Night Check. As a quick run down, I try to prep my kids as best I can the night before school, you can read more about those tips here. Generally, my kids have a pretty good idea of what they want to wear, but I may need to help direct them with their choices so that they are weather appropriate. I don’t always have the clothes picked out the night before, so if that is the case for you there are still things you can do to save you time.
Avoid the fight. Each of my children have gone through the stage of being obsessive about what they wear. I think it’s great that my kids can have their own self expression but I don’t like creating a fight over weather appropriate clothing. To help reduce the enormity of the decision I will pick two options that I am comfortable with and ask my son/daughter, “Do you want to wear the blue shirt with the stripes or the green shirt with the Dinosaur?” This was I can pick what type of shirt it is short sleeve/sweater, but I hand over the decision process of what to my child. This has saved me so many times when it comes to getting out the door because it simplifies the process.
Create a space for each child to keep their things. When I am stressed and trying to get myself and the kids out the door I tend to start barking orders: BRUSH YOUR TEETH, PUT ON YOUR SHOES, DON’T FORGET YOUR COAT. When We have these items in one place the morning always runs more smoothly. Have a spot for each of your kids to put their bag, coat, and shoes so finding them in the morning is a breeze. (Assuming they actually put them in their special place.
Make Breakfast simple and nutritious. This step is so important because you need to fuel yourself for the day and your little ones. We will prepare hard boiled eggs ahead of time, toast with avocado, or a quick bowl of cereal. Smoothies take a small amount of time and are easy to take with you on the go. If I have even more time I love to make daily smoothies using almondmilk because it provides an excellent source of calcium, Vitamin D and Vitamin E and has far fewer calories dairy milk .It’s also a good source of Vitamin A. Unsweetened almondmilk is a great choice for consumers that are lactose-intolerant or allergic to dairy, require low-calorie or low-sugar foods, or simply want to try a creamy, tasty, calcium-enriched alternative to dairy milk.
Getting a good breakfast in is essential for my survival for the day, so make sure to get something in your body so you are good to go.
Get your kids moving as soon as you can, too. I don’t know about you, but my kids take a while to wake up and get moving. Sometimes I feel like I am watching the sloth from Zootopia because they can’t seem to get their little bodies to function. I have found it is best to give them 5 minutes to adjust and wake up as slow as possible so that they are not in a funk the rest of the morning before we get out the door. My mom used to help us with the waking up process by turning fun music on, cracking the door/window, and gradually letting light in. I am not always super sensitive to this process and I pay for it; especially with my four year old. Wake with caution.
Mom hair doesn’t have to be boring. There are a few easy ways to get your hair in check even when you only have a few seconds to do it. Some of my favorite ways are the top bun, the mini French braid, or a side braid. If all else fails grab a hat/beanie and call it a day. #Messyhairdontcare is all the rage, so as long as you feel confident others probably won’t notice.
Keep extras in the car. This technique has saved me so many times. I simply keep extra somethings in the car that we need on a regular basis. This includes items like: granola bars, socks, brush, elastics, bobby pins, pencils (for last minute homework assignments), sunblock/bug spray, diapers/wipes, bandaids, phone chargers, and shoes. You may be wondering why I would need extra shoes in the car, but I notoriously have a son who forgets to wear his shoes or doesn’t like wearing them so we bring them with us instead of having the fight before we get in the car.
