IKEA: #first59 and The Morning RUSH

IKEA and the Mom it Forward Community have challenged me to try the first :59 morning challenge  a new program introduced to help families every where improve the first hour of the day in the “rush areas” of the home: bathroom, kitchen, and bedrooms. IKEA hopes to make the beginning of the day a great start so that the rest of the day can run even more smoothly. I am being compensated for writing this, but all opinions are my own, besides I am obsessed with IKEA and any chance I get to make my  life a little more organized I will take it!

I knew this day would eventually come, the day I would have to send my baby off to all-day school. He was ready. Jackson has always been my social butterfly and had a hard time sticking around inside all afternoon while his two younger siblings were napping through the Summer. So although it is a rite of passage that means things will never be the same I know it is time. This is just the first of many “letting go’s” or “cutting of the apron strings” and it stings just a little. Another reality check is having to be on top of it in the morning. I can no longer just stay in the cacoon of my house snuggling my kids all day or going bra-less. I actually am responsible to get him somewhere EVERY.SINGLE. DAY. And let’s face it, it can be pretty stressful!

So far a peanut butter and honey sandwich is all that he requires and the trickiest part of getting ready has been  making sure he knows what he is wearing and getting myself organized and out the door. I don’t know why I did this to myself, but I have Jackson in school full time, Jackson in Soccer, Jayne in Soccer, Jayne in Dance, and Jayne in preschool! Sometimes it is in those first 59 minutes that I am getting the four of us ready (Jett included) to be gone for the entire day and that is a lot to remember!

IKEA conducted a recent survey about people’s morning habits. In the results, 72% of those surveyed said that a stressful morning affected the rest of their day and three in four people do not have a regular weekday morning routine.

ikea first 59 facts

There are two things that I am going to try to make our mornings run a little more smoothly. One is having our outfits laid out the day before and the other is organize my bathroom space so that I can get ready more quickly as well. IKEA has awesome new tools to help you do just that! You can start with a Valet Stand like this or choose one of the many special hooks they have to designate a special place for tomorrow’s outfit.

So far I’ve been using a decorative shelf as his “outfit hook” and the concept has worked really well, but I am not happy with how it makes that part of his room look like a mini closet. 🙂

The next place I am dying to make more organized is my bathroom drawers. Some how they are full of the things I do not need in the first moments of the day and are a “catch all” of the most random things. I am also looking forward to making more drawer space for my husband so that he doesn’t have to leave his things on the counter top as well.

My mind is so much happier when I can see the products that I need to get ready in the morning and because I have sooo many products my husbands’ often get left on the counter and I can’t find the stuff I really need and use on a day-to-day basis. IKEA has a billion organizing solutions but I am really crushing over this one.

For more inspiration, IKEA has made a dedicated pinterest board to First :59. You can also share your own morning routine suggestions on social media using the hashtag #First59. For more survey findings, panelist tips, product suggestions and more information on the program, visit First59.com

Next week I will show you my results! I can’t wait to get things running more smoothly in the morning. What tips do you have for having the morning run more smoothly?
