Making your bedroom an Oasis

Paul and I recently built a home (we feel very lucky and blessed that we were able to do this). While our home was being built we lived in my parents basement with a very young baby and a rambunctious preschooler. We were there for eight months, and in those moments of peace when the kids were in bed, I would day dream about what I wanted my home to look like and what I wanted it to feel like. My bedroom was a space that I wanted to focus on. I wanted to give it the feel of a fresh, comfortable hotel room that I could escape to. Having a tight budget created the need to be creative and spend a little more time finding exactly what I needed to make the room feel so airy and light. And I am here to share that with you!

I started with the bed. We have had this bed for seven years. We found it at RC Willey for just $200. It was an overstock item still new in it’s box; complete with headboard, foot board, and side rails. Score. The bedding that I fell in love with was this. But because $250 was out of the picture for a duvet cover, I found this one instead. It is also sold at Pottery Barn here, but I found the exact same one from Down East Outfitters, you can find the locations here. Down East gets overstock/damaged goods from Pottery Barn, and although they cannot tell you that is where they are from, you can easily check the tags to see that they are! 🙂 This brand new duvet cover was only $55, which is more that 50% savings, regularly $129. I did get a little bit of the textured look I was going for by purchasing this throw from Ikea, that can be stretched the length/width of the bed for just $20.

I found these darling sham covers that matched the duvet perfectly that say “HIM” and “HER.” Most of the monogrammed pillows they will have will have initials that were done wrong, but I was lucky to find these. You can still buy the other monogrammed pillows and just pick out the stitching. If you look REALLY close you can see that the letters are just slightly greener than the stripe around the pillow. That is why I was able to buy them for $2 instead of $37 per pillow case.

The wall of curtains that I put behind my bed was just something I came up with to soften the room without using any artwork. I needed to find something affordable that I could use across the entire wall, and something that was long enough to go from ceiling to floor. I found these curtains at IKEA that were just $5 for a pair. I used three pairs to go across the width of the room. I didn’t want to draw attention to the curtain rod, I wanted it to be there simply to hold the curtains. So I found this curtain rod from IKEA as well and I was so excited to see that it was only $2 for all of the hardware that you would need. I did buy three to accommodate the wall and actually had my hubby cut down one small to fit all three across. He simply did this with a hand saw. Of course you can use this same idea and do any color you would like or be able to switch it up do a different color when you change your decor.

For the window I used another pair of the same “LIL” curtains and added this pair to give it a little more bulk.

I absolutely fell in love with these lamps from Home Goods. I found them on clearance from $85 to $40. I loved the size and balance it brought to the space. The little side tables used to belong to my grandmother. I have considered painting them but haven’t decided on it yet. I think I leave them brown because of the warmth it brings to the room.

$10 from Hobby Lobby (after 40% coupon)

Eiffel Tower canvas, $12.99 from Ross

Floral arrangement originally from local floral shop, purchased at DI (good will) for $2.

My sewing corner. I use this space to hide my materials (in the hutch).

This is my very tired dog, Poppy, now that it is after midnight I am pooped too. I hope you enjoyed a tour of my room!

    • Olivia,

I am so glad you said that, because I labeled it wrong. It is from Hobby Lobby! (Which you may already know you can pull up a coupon on your smart phone and they will discount any one item regularly priced.) They will even let you do one per person or transaction (depending on the cashier you have.) Thanks for catching that…I thought where would I get a 40% off coupon to Home Goods? Ha ha. I would love to sew with you any time! 🙂ReplyCancel
