You can sew even with scrap fabric or remnant fabric scraps! My Mother is a seamstress, a brilliant seamstress. I remember many nights listening to her sew into the late hours of the night. She made her own porcelain dolls and made and designed the patterns for the dresses that they wore. She really is talented. Many times she asked if I wanted to learn to sew and my answer was always no. Fast forward to my first year of college when I decided I wanted to become a high school teacher, specifically teaching adult roles, and learning I had to take intermediate and advanced sewing classes. They cut out the beginner’s course because they figure that if you are picking this major (Family and Consumer Sciences) you most certainly already know how to sew.
I was the girl who asked how to thread the machine on the first day of class. The teacher rolled her eyes and asked me to refer to my textbook. I was fortunate enough to be one who didn’t have to complete the beginners class because they had just cut it out of the degree requirement. I am telling you this as a pre-curser to my sewing tutorial to say that I am not an expert and you certainly can learn to sew if I did. From that first day of class I was asked to complete many projects that intimidated me and also design a pattern and make a garment from the pattern. I am thankful that despite my attempts to avoid sewing (in my early years) I was forced to learn and discover I truly enjoy it!
One place I always look for inspiration is the remnant baskets at the fabric store or even a second hand store like the Salvation Army or DI. You would be surprised what you can find! I made this polka dot skirt out of a fabric remnant I found out the DI for only $0.50!
So for today I thought I would pull out one of these remnants to make an easy skirt and a bow tie. This fabric remnant was half a yard and cost only $2. A website that I love and inspired me to do this skirt is www.rufflesandstuff.com. She has many easy tutorials to get you started and event the basics of sewing and threading your machine ect.
