Considering a cruise for you next family vacation? There are a lot of things to consider when you are trying to choose the right cruise for you family. Before you begin, here are a few questions you may want to answer.
- Consider the length of time you’d like to cruise.
- Are you wanting to really see the places you’re traveling or just enjoy the ship life?
- Are you traveling with children, as a couple, or a girls trip?
- Consider the excursions and experiences in total cost.
- Factor in the cost of travel getting to your port before and after your vacation.
- Do you want a relaxing vacation or more of a high adventure cruise?
Have you heard that my friends at Get Away Today have recently launched a brand new cruise website to make booking a cruise easier than ever before? Not only that, but the agents in the cruise department at Get Away Today have a ton of knowledge about cruise lines; everything from what the different cruise lines offer, to what amenities are available on which ships. Today I’ve once again asked my partners at Get Away Today to share with you what they know so you can see what is currently available for family cruises.
Family Cruises – Choose a Cruise Length
Different cruise lines offer different trip itineraries. You can choose from 2-3 day itineraries for quick getaways, or something longer like a 7 or 14 day cruise.
Family Cruises – Choose a Destination
Where does your family want to explore? Europe? Mexico? How about the West Coast? Deciding on a destination will be one of the first things to plan for a family cruise. This will help you determine which cruise line will best suit your needs, and will also correlate with cruise length. Get Away Today has cruise destinations such as the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Alaska and Mexico. You can explore beaches, ancient ruins or forest hikes depending on which destination you choose.
Family Cruises – Choose a Cruise Line
Get Away Today partners with some of the best cruise lines for families! From the ships themselves to their particular ports, you are sure to find something that suits your family’s needs. Here are a few highlights to consider:
Caribbean cruise lines have the newest and biggest ships.Because of their ship sizes, they offer the widest array of amenities on board. Activities on Caribbean cruise ships include flow riders, laser tag, a 10-story water slide and a zipline bike ride. You can also find some ships with rock climbing, ice skating and even IMax theaters.
If your family is adventurous and loves the outdoors, consider an Alaskan cruise with Norwegian cruise line. Norwegian cruise ships are also among some of the largest. Some Norwegian ships offer go-kart style racing on board, as well as laser tag. Since Alaskan cruises focus on the beauty of scenery, ships like the Ovation of the Seas try to maximize your exposure to it, offering views of glaciers through an enclosed capsule on a crane-like arm that reaches beyond the ship’s deck. Your family is sure to be dazzled by the beauty found on an Alaskan cruise.
My favorite Cruiseline is DISNEY!! There are four ships in the Disney cruise line, and each has its own theme. Regardless of which ship you choose, you’ll find some outstanding amenities on board. Disney is the only cruise line that includes self-serve soda and juice at no additional charge, which can be a big selling point for many! A Disney cruise will offer character experiences, themed cruise days and exceptional celebrations for holidays. There’s a complimentary kids club for children ages 3+, and a separate gathering place for children ages 12+. With all shows on board based on various Disney themes, they’re fun for the whole family.

Is Food free on a cruise?
Your cruise fare always includes food for breakfast, lunch and dinner on a cruiseship. However, each ship may offer special dining experiences above and beyond the every day buffet and dining options at an additional charge. For example, the Disney Cruiseline offers a restaurant called The Palo that takes dining to a whole new level. There is never a shortage of food, but keep your options open to try something extra special.
Also, most cruises will offer a late night buffet like the pirate buffet on the Disney cruise line. These food experiences make your cruise experience extra special so don’t miss out!
