Home Decorating with a Modern + Rustic + Eclectic Style

As you know, our family will be moving in a few weeks and we are getting ready for the insane amounts of chaos that is about to take place. I have been packing boxes, which has taken me longer than normal, because I’m organizing/decluttering everything as I go. Holy SMOKES… where does all of this STUFF come from? I’m convinced that socks and shoes multiply like gremlins – but for some reason there still aren’t any pairs.

I tried the Marie Kondo method “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing,” and after finding myself surrounded by 10 bags of clothes in the “give away pile” I freaked out and put a good chunk of it back.

I’ve been pinning like a seamstress on crack, as I’ve desperately looked for MY MOMMY STYLE. I’ve waited my whole life to (really) begin decorating my home, and now that its here – it seems a bit overwhelming. The good news is that I’ve always loved this sort of thing and I’m excited to explore this part of myself. I love creating a space of happiness through design, color, textures, words, dance and song.

I believe there are so many ways to do this and unfortunately, I’ve waited until I was older to do it. I’ve had this “all or nothing” sort of feeling about my home, and because we’ve never been able to buy a lot of furniture or create my ultimate space, I pretty much shut the door and decided “Out of site, out of mind”. Besides, when you are raising small children, they trash whatever you create, anyway.

My goal in sharing this move and process with you, is to look for ways to find happiness in your current space. I am buying my dream home – but I feel like I’ve missed out on years of creativity and enjoyment.  Pinterest is FULL of ideas that can be done on any budget and in any sort of space.

So, let’s get started!

If you want to take this journey with me, I’d recommend beginning to declutter. I really did enjoy the Marie Kondo method, but I stopped listening to the book on audible (as I was decluttering) when I realized how much I was about to get rid of. I think it was dangerous listening to her extreme ways, while I was actually in the process of filling bags!

Simplifying = good – Giving away everything you own leaving you naked = not good. HERE is the link to her book on Amazon.

Here are some of the topics I plan to cover:

Picking paint colors for your home, building a “whole home” paint plan, surrounding yourself with happy triggers, the moving process, picking contractors, involving the kids in the decorating process, creating organization solutions for your family, and more.

And now, finally, a little eye candy! I’m using these (and many more) pictures for inspiration as I pick my paints and style.  As I mentioned before, it’s taken me a lot of pinning to start off because I am very eclectic and attracted to anything that makes me happy – which is all over the board. Name any color or style, and I’ve pinned it. I really believe decorating in a way that agrees with the look and feel of the house – and this can take some. I am still in this process and discovering as I go – but it’s fun to share the journey.

I’d love your feedback on anything I share! Do you like it? Is it gross? Weigh in! I’ve found myself settling in a sort of “modern + rustic + eclectic” feel. As you will see below, my style is all over the board – but I will always LOVE bright and happy rooms with pops of vibrant color!

Right now my focus has been on the walls, trying to come up with the perfect shade of paint.

A BIG Disclaimer: I am NOT A PRO and I don’t claim to be one. This is just my experience in finding my decorating style. I’m glad you’re here and I’d love to hear your thoughts!  We do have exposed wood beams, wood floors and lots of windows, similar to these photos – which is why they were chosen as inspiration.

What is your favorite picture above and why? You can help me design as I go along!
