Last month I made a list of the 50 best read-aloud chapter books for kids. The list consisted of books I have already read to my two young boys and some more that we were planning on reading. Check out the post to find out what I have learned while reading books aloud to my kids. I am so pleased because that post is officially my most popular one. I’m pleased because it means that families are excited about reading together and I LOVE that! I had comments flooding in from all over with favorite chapter books that you have read to your children and I HAD to make them into their own special list.
Thank you for your comments and keep reading to your kids! They will use their imaginations, broaden their vocabulary, form a love of reading, and go on an adventure all while snuggling and bonding with you.

Hello! I am Camille, a wife, mother of four, Disney obsessed, certified teacher, and reality optimist. Motherhood comes with its ups and downs, and I hope while you’re here you’ll find something that makes your #momlife easier!
You should check out Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher and Stone Fox… my two favorites. Thanks for you list most I have read to my kids but I have some new ones to enjoy!
The Wildwood series by Colin Meloy
Great list! A family favorite that I have highly recommended to many families is The Phantom Tollbooth. A fantastically fun, clever classic that must be read out loud, with voices. 🙂
One of my favorites is “Mandy” by Julie Edwards (it’s actually Julie Andrews). Such a great book! I read it several times as a kid and my daughter just got done reading it aloud to me over a few days time. She got 100% on the AR reading test she took for it too. Great read! One of my favorite younger children’s books is “Ferdinand” by Munro Leaf. My mother read that to me so many times I had it memorized.
It isn’t a chapter book, but we have read it over and over and over…Harry & the Crazed Chicken Pirates. Ridiculous, but both of us (my son is 4) end up laughing every single time. It has definitely joined the ranks of favorite books in our house!
Wonderful lists! Please include John Reynolds Gardiner’s book Stone Fox, and also include Wilson Rawl’s Summer of the Monkeys. These books were always voted best books read by my elementary students for the last 34 years. That is a strong recommendation!
My all-time favourites for my six year old daughter are the recent “Lilliput” by Sam Gayton, and the classics Charlotte’s Web, Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland.
Snot Stew by Bill Wallace is funny and fun. It is NOT about snot but two cute kittens and how they perceive humans and dogs.
I am a school librarian and am sharing your wonderful list with my teachers, who frequently ask me for a good book to read aloud.
two of my absolute favorites:
1. The Cabin Faced West by Jean Fritz.
Set in 1784 in the wilderness of western Pennsylvania, ten-year-old Ann Hamilton (Fritz’s great-great grandmother!) is the only girl and is lonesome and homesick for her friends and the comforts of civilization. The story ends with a visit by George Washington who eats supper with them. George Washington really did eat with the Hamilton family. The event is recorded in his diary.
2. Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare. In 1687 in the Connecticut colony, Kit Tyler, feels out of place in her aunt’s Puritan household. She befriends an old woman who is considered to be a witch by the community. Kit suddenly finds herself on trial for witchcraft. (After all, she could SWIM!) You will learn more about colonial life through this book than any history book.

Thank you for these lists! Two of our favorites are Howl’s Moving Castle by. Diana Wynne Jones and her sequel to that book which is called House of Many Ways. They are enjoyed by kids and adults alike!
Thank you for the suggestions!
