These Au Gratin potatoes were so creamy, cheesy and delicious. These taste great with ham, but really they are the perfect side dish for whatever you are serving. This is also the easiest way I have ever found to make au gratin potatoes. I have tried the recipes where you layer the potatoes and cheese, but this one you mix everything together and then dump it in your baking dish. Not only was there a lot less prep time, but I feel like this way made the potatoes cook faster and more evenly. I will be making these potatoes again and again and I know I won’t hear any complaints from my family.
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ⅛ teaspoon pepper
- 2 cups milk
- 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 5 cups thinly sliced peeled potatoes (about 6 medium)
- ½ cup chopped onion
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- In a large pan, melt butter over low heat. Whisk in flour, salt and pepper until smooth. Gradually add milk. Bring to a boil. Cook, continually stirring for 2 minutes or until thickened. Remove from heat. Add the cheese and stir until melted. Add potatoes and onion and stir until coated with cheese mixture.
- Spray a 9x12 baking dish with non-stick spray. Add potatoes to the baking dish. Cover and bake 1 hour. Uncover; bake 20-30 minutes or until the potatoes are tender.
