Having a newborn is glorious and wonderful. It fills you with a joy and heart full of love that you never knew existed. Having a newborn makes you look at the world with different eyes. Everything is new again with this new tiny baby in your life.
Having a newborn is incredibly exhausting.
All of the sudden 3 a.m. and 3 p.m. feel like they could be the same time of day for you because you are wandering through time like a zombie. You are happy to have this baby, but you are seeing this new bright and wonderful world through eyes half shut due to pure exhaustion.
Add in a recovering body after giving birth, a colicky/hungry baby, and exhaustion and things can start to get a really hazy. You see, no matter if this is your first baby or your fourth, you are a new mother to this baby and you are figuring this out together all over again.
Let me paint you a picture.
It’s late, let’s say 2:36 am and your baby is hungry again. It’s only been 1.5 hours since you last fed her and you feel like you slept for maybe 20 minutes. You’re worried that maybe your milk supply is low. Do I have enough for her? Is it my fault she is still hungry? Your baby struggles to latch through the crying. You are crying too. You feel so tense and so tired the only prayer you can utter over and over is “please let her sleep” “please let her sleep.”
I have been there my friends and the struggle is real.
To refrain from losing your mind I have found that it is good to have something for you as the mother to keep your cool. Something that will calm YOUR mind as you work your way through these endless nights. Your baby can sense if you are tense and stressed out and that will only make the situation worse.
While I was working my way through the first few months of late night endless feedings I would play Zombies vs. Plants. And it saved my sanity. Let me explain. After attending to the babies diapering needs and while nursing I would play zombies vs plants and it helped me in multiple ways.
- It kept me awake while nursing.
- I had fun conquering the levels.
- It made the time pass by more quickly.
- It made it so I didn’t get too wrapped up in the frustration of the moment if my baby was upset/crying.
- It gave me something to look forward to while being up that late at night.
I don’t know if this game would work for you, but find something. A favorite TV show, a game, listening to an audio book etc. It can be a game changer for those late night feedings as it really can help you keep your cool when you feel like you are losing your mind. Of course, this applies to parents who are bottle feeding as well.
It can be a good idea to use headphones so that it remains quiet for your baby as you want to establish that this is “night” time and a time hopefully that your baby will soon be sleeping.
