On days that are cold or rainy I’ll make a batch of play dough for my kids and they LOVE it. It’s easy to make, it takes less than 10 minutes, and my kids play with it for hours. I have been using this play dough recipe for years and it is by far the best, I’ve tried others and they just don’t compare. The texture is the best and the shelf life is awesome! I keep this play dough in a ziplock baggie in my fridge and it lasts months, I had some that lasted 6 months, and I only threw it away because my kids mixed green, black, and yellow together and it looked like moldy bread. 🙂
Homemade play dough
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup water
- 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup salt
- 2 teaspoons cream of tarter
- food coloring
In a large pan add all your ingredients.
Mix everything together and turn your burner on med/low.
As your dough heats up it will be lumpy at first. This is okay. The first time I made this it freaked me out, but it’s all good.
This picture was taken exactly 2 minutes after the lumpy one above. You’re almost there! Cook it until it starts to gather around your spoon, 2-3 minutes.
When you’re done, take it from the pan and knead out any lumps, I added my food coloring at this point, but really it is a lot easier if you add it in the beginning. You won’t end up with colorful hands.
My kids like to use the rolling pin, cookie cutters, plastic knives and we found a new favorite……
….the garlic press!
Have fun and don’t be afraid to roll up your sleeves and join your kids! Kneading play dough is great stress reliever. 🙂
