Family Tradition: Back-to-school banquet

We had a fun back to school banquet last year when my son started Kindergarten and we had so much fun that it has become a family tradition. We have a delicious dinner, fun (easy) decorations, small gifts and a delicious dessert. Oh, and maybe the most important thing is they each get a Jone’s soda with dinner. We rarely let the kids have soda so they think it’s awesome that they get their own bottle. We then finish with a family meeting and talk about the upcoming school year. It gets the kids excited for school and it’s good family fun. After we had our party I was putting my four year old to bed and just as he was about to drift off he said, “this was the best day ever!”

(P.S. I’m a little embarrassed to show you my dining room. During our move we broke most of our chairs so we’ve been using folding chairs for a few months. But the upside is that I can fold them and put them away during the day so my toddler doesn’t climb all over my table.)

I tend to go a little overboard for parties, but I like to keep this one pretty simple because I want to focus on family time not stressed out about it going perfectly. I like to add decorations because it makes the dinner feel a little more special, but I make sure to go simple on the decorations. These dot streamers add whimsy and fun to your table, but they are super easy to make.

I bought this craft punch at a scrapbook store a few years ago and it has been worth every penny. I use it for parties decorations, card making, and activities for my kids. I love this thing!

All you have to do is punch out a bunch of circles with card stock. Tape a circle to fishing line and space them out every two or three inches. I have found that 7 circles per line is the perfect height. I then tape one more circle on the back of each of the first set of circles so you can’t see the tape. Then hang them up.

I decided last minute that I should add a centerpiece so I found a stack of books and vase full of pencils. So simple!

I found those adorable lined notebook napkins at Target’s dollar spot during the summer. Each kid gets a small gift just to make the night feel more special. Last year I stayed with the theme and gave them a book and erasures. This year I gave them each a small toy that I found on clearance.

We did party hats last year, but this year they chose Mardi Gras necklaces to wear during the party.

Cheers!

After dinner we had brownie sundaes. This is Sam saying, “Sooooo goooooood!”
