The best Snickerdoodles

My husband is a victim of the cinnamon challenge. You know, where you try and swallow a spoonful of cinnamon without any water. It’s pretty much impossible and because of that incident my husband is not a huge fan of cinnamon. I know these cookies are good because he will eat them without any repressed cinnamon challenge memories resurfacing.

These are crisp on the outside and nice and chewy in the middle. They are puffy and delicious without being cakey. I love snickerdoodles and this recipe is the BEST! Don’t be afraid to really coat your snickerdoodle balls with that cinnamon/sugar mixture and take those bad boys out of the oven at 8 minutes. They might not look done, but believe me, they are! Let them cool on the tray for a minute or two before transferring them to a cooling rack.

Isn’t there some internet rule where you have to take a picture of your cookies in a stack? Well, here’s my snickerdoodle stack. Mmmmm…….look at all that cinnamon and sugary goodness.

The best Snickerdoodles

1/2 cup butter, softened

1/2 cup shortening

1 1/2 cups white sugar

2 eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla

2 3/4 cups flour

2 teaspoons cream of tartar

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

3 Tablespoons white sugar

3 teaspoons cinnamon

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  2. Cream together butter, shortening, 1 1/2 cups sugar, the eggs and the vanilla. Blend in the flour, cream of tartar, soda and salt. Shape dough by rounded spoonfuls into balls.
  3. Mix the 3 tablespoons sugar and the cinnamon. Roll balls of dough in mixture. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.
  4. Bake 8 minutes, or until set but not too hard. Remove immediately from baking sheets.

These look to be the REAL DEAL snickerdoodles I grew up with!!!…Question…no shortening in France!…Could I possibly use “saindoux”…which is white, purified lard sold in butter-shaped rectangular packages as a worthy substitute?…Any advice would be much appreciated…by the entire family!

Your photography is SPECTACULAR by the way….perfect lighting and plating!ReplyCancel

Hey Donna, Thank you so much for stopping by and for your comments! I’m glad you tried out these snickerdoodles and that you loved them! They are our favorite cookie! If your cookies are turning out a little flat it might be that your cream of tartar or baking soda isn’t fresh or that your eggs are too big. I use large eggs for this recipe, but if your eggs are a extra large you would need to pour out a little bit of the egg white to get the cookie puffy.

I’m curious what you ended up using for the shortening substitute. I wasn’t sure so I searched the internet and found this website that can give you a little more info. http://www.fitday.com/fitness-articles/nutrition/healthy-eating/substitutes-for-shortening.html It sounds like a lot of people had success substituting butter for shortening.

Thank you for the compliment on the photography! I’m still learning so I appreciate the feed back!! 🙂

Enjoy those snickerdoodles and stop by again!ReplyCancel

JUST made these….they really ARE the “real-deal” Snickerdoodles of my youth!!…BUT..BUT…they are not quite as “high” as yours…..do I need to position them in the oven a bit differently (mine is quite small….kind of a “mini” oven version of the larger oven just above it…or perhaps my cream of tartar was not as fresh and giving of the “tallness/puff” factor that yours so obviously display?…The taste is out of this world…texture…top! Thank you for sharing this winning recipe. My family is in love with it…so I wish to look no further for our “house” Snickerdoodle!ReplyCancel

I got a “snickerdoodle” bug. I must say the reason I’m going to make yours tomorrow is because I like your Pinterest photo the best. A picture, hopefully, will be worth a thousand words.ReplyCancel
