16 Foods you Must Try in New Orleans (and Where to Find Them)

foodie, New Orleans, Best food in New Orleans, NOLA, My Mommy Style, Sea Food, beignets

If you missed my first post introducing you to the beautiful city of New Orleans, you can check that out here.

Today we are talking everything food, and as I mentioned before, food is one of the best features of New Orleans. There are so many different spices, methods, tastes, and recipes that I was experiencing for the first time and I was lucky enough to try the best of the best. Originally this post was going to be “Top 10” and I HAD to make it Top 16. I know that is a lot, but trust me I narrowed it down!

1. Oysters from Arnaud’s

Oysters Rockefeller

Fresh spinach and bacon with a touch of Pernod. I was really nervous to try it as I am traditionally not  seafood lover, but I was pleasantly surprised! And we all know that bacon makes everything taste better!

Cookie crisp topped with English toffee-chocolate mousse and ganache

Oh. My. This chocolate dessert was so rich and amazing. It has the thickness of a decadent fudge and I wished so much I could take it home with me. You could definitely share this one and would feel a lot less guilty about eating it. Must you must order it. You must.

3. Baked Apple from Brennans

We were lucky enough to come and have breakfast at Brennan’s since its recent remodel and reopening and it was quite the experience. I understand now why it is such an event to eat here. This baked apple was the perfect mixture of sweet and tart. I loved the cinnamon on top.

Baked Apple, Apple, Breakfast at Brennans,New Orleans Trip 2015 226Oh Peche! This restaurant was my very favorite of the entire trip, which is probably no surprise as it has recently won the James Beard awards for “Best New Restaurant”and “Best Top Chef!” I am honestly telling you that it is so well deserved. Please excuse me as I list five MUSTS from their restaurant…find a friend and share a few small plates from the menu!

4. Fish Sticks from Peche

I am not a fish sticks fan, or at least I thought I wasn’t until having these!

5. White BBQ Chicken Scewers from Peche

6. Fried Brussel sprouts in Chili Vinegar at Peche

You may be thinking, “Why did brussel sprouts make the list?” I would wonder the same thing…that is why you have to try them to understand. I would love to have this recipe, maybe my kids would eat brussel sprouts if I did!

7. Spicy Ground Shrimp and Noodles from Peche

Such an unexpected taste and so tasty. It is not super spicy, so if you don’t like spicy things you will be able to handle this just fine.

8. Abita, locally brewed Root Beer found at Peche

It is very possible this can be found other places, this is just where I had mine.

9. Crepes from Langlois

These crepes are so creamy and delicious! The best part is that you can actually learn to make them yourself, recipe and all. I will share more about their facility tomorrow!

I wish my lighting had been better so I could have captured a better picture, but I was in love with this restaurant. It is very comfortable and personal. It really makes you feel like you are coming home to your Aunt’s kitchen. An Aunt that cooks the best food in the world.

12.Fried Green Tomato with Shrimp Remoulade

This recipe is unique to the Upperline restaurant and has such a delicious mustard taste mixed with the fried green tomatoes.

13. Beignets from Cafe Dumonde

This is by no surprise of course, a New Orleans favorite. They are piled high with powdered sugar, lots of smiles and busy tables. I wish I would have made more time to come back for seconds.

14. Creme Brulee from Brennan’s.

I took this picture and sent it to my husband while I was in the restaurant because creme brulee is his favorite dessert. That was probably really mean but I couldn’t help it. It was so thick and perfectly creamy. If you are a fan of this dessert, Brennan’s does not disappoint.

Oh Sucre! Such a beautiful place to spend an hour with company you love. My personal favorite was their macaroons. They were amazing! While searching for this picture I actually found their recipe and it is posted for all to see! Seriously I did not understand what the hype of a macaroon was until I tried theirs. I seriously could not believe how good it was.

The coffee has rave reviews as well as the ice cream. Really, you can’t go wrong with anything inside these walls.
