How to Create a Comfy- Cozy Guest Room

10 tips to creat a cozy guest room

(source, source, source, source)

It’s that time of year again, when guests spend more time in our house and memories are made! It can be stressful, but it is also a blessing. It is fun to have the company, but it can also make you feel self conscious about your home and its shortcomings. I always believe that time spent together (even if it’s stressful) is worth the investment of time.

This is why I decided to come up with a list of things you can do to make your guest feel welcome. You’ll want to give them a room that is their own, whether you have a room that is designed to be a guest room or you have to scoot the kids onto the family room floor. If you make it warm and welcoming, they won’t even notice the slightly sagging sofa or a bit of dust on the shelf.

Here are a few tips about how to do it!

  • Make sure to provide a soft throw that they can curl up with while reading a good book or warming up if your house is cooler than they are used to. (This happens in our house all the time!)
  • Provide hooks for your guests to hang their jacket or bag on, and leave space in the closet with empty hangers. It will provide a feeling of being in a hotel within the comfort of your home. This way your friends won’t have to live out of their suitcase or wear a wrinkled dress to dinner.
  • Set a clock on the night stand, just in case they need a way to wake up in the morning. (Unless you life in my house, and you don’t stand a chance of sleeping in!)
  • Try to find linens that are soft and look nice. It can take a basic sleeping experience into feeling like a boutique hotel, and they don’t have to cost a fortune. Fluffy towels are another way to make bath time extra special. Choose neutrals to appeal to the range of tastes, and include extra pillows and blankets – just in case!
  • Put extra blankets or pillows in a pretty basket, and include a wastebasket that is easily accessible.
  • Flowers always make a room feel more fresh and happy. It doesn’t matter if they are real or faux, the color and thought will make your guest smile.
  • Other details like a reading lamp or tissue container are nice gestures that will make them feel well cared for.
  • Providing a mirror for your guest to get ready, will always be helpful. It’s always awkward to have to go into someone’s space to get ready in the morning – why not offer a way to do some of it in their own room?
  • If you know of a treat they love, setting it out on the bed for when they arrive would be a fun idea!
  • Leave some brochures in their room of fun things to do in the area.
  • My very favorite tip is to leave some pictures in their room of times you’ve spent together. It will make them smile, laugh, or remind them of the times you’ve spent together before.

Okay, now that I have completely overwhelmed you, realize that I have only done some of these things, sometimes. I am not anywhere close to perfect! Usually my guests are lucky to get a towel to shower or pillow to sleep with. Now that we are starting to be settled in our new home, this is a goal of mine – so I thought I’d share it with you! I’d love to hear any other ideas you have in the comments!

I loved the idea of putting personal photos in the room. I put a small dorm size refrigerator in the closet and stock it with beverages, glasses, fruit, nuts, candy bars etc. I iron the sheets and pillow cases. It adds to that pampered feeling. I also put a serving tray on the bed, they can use it to eat on or a flat surface for letter writing. To me the most important thing is to provide a designated area for your guests. I also use my best china and silverware throughout their visit. No one likes to feel they are an after thought especially when spending time and money to get there. I think I’ve stayed in some of the worst guest bedrooms . For example:  40 year old shag carpet, same sheets on the bed from my last visit a year ago, mattress older than the shag carpet, mismatched furniture pieces that need to be returned to Goodwill. If people would just follow the steps you listed, it would be a huge improvement over the way most people take care of their guestsReplyCancel
