Nighttime Rituals for Better Sleep

It’s 8:00 and we just finished dinner. Dishes are still out, kids are asking what is for dessert, baby is crying, and Dad is ready to take a moment to relax on the couch. Things at this point can either go one of two ways. We can let things happen as they will which eventually leads to crying and tantrums when it is announced it is time to go to bed or we can start our “Nighttime ritual” That goes a little like this: I finish up the dishes while my husband gets the kids into the bath. We wash up, lotion up, read books, and then settle down with a family prayer. It really seems to help my kids feel more settled when we follow this basic run down of events.

On goodnites.com it is suggested that we take time for bonding…

“Bedtime can be a wonderful opportunity for family bonding,” Dr. Buchalter says. “There is a special closeness that a parent and child can get during bedtime. Consider bedtime a quality time to talk to, soothe and love your child. Most kids – especially active ones – may not like to cuddle. You may be surprised that, at night, your child may want to cuddle. Take advantage of that and feel the special closeness. Use this as an opportunity to remind your child how proud of them you are and how much you love them.”

I have found as a Mother that when I take the time to create a “Night time ritual” with getting my kids to bed things run a lot more smoothly. There is always so much to worry about through out the day and I find that night time is when my kids want nothing more than a little snuggle, a kiss, and a song. It is in small moments like this that we truly enjoy being together as a family. The opposite can hold true when bedtimes are rushed, pushed back or not taken as a moment to enjoy. Trust me, there are nights I can’t wait for “Mommy Time” to begin!

Now is a great opportunity to stock up on your bedtime essentials when it comes to the bathing department. Johnson and Johnson is teaming up with CVS and hosting an amazing Twitter party where you can benefit from winning free gift cards for participating! You can go directly to the CVS site to join in on the fun!
