15 Tips for Breastfeeding: A Complete Guide for Nursing your Baby Successfully Written by: Camille Now that Jett is three months old I am starting to feel like I am coming out of the new baby zombie fog that settles in a bit with a new baby. Things are starting to feel a little normal...
Camille, These tips are so helpful! I have to admit I am a little nervous to have our first baby in just 2.5 months! For a lot of reasons, and nursing is definitely one of them. Thanks for the ideas on things I can buy to help with it and things I can try to do as well!
You’re welcome! I am so excited for you! Don’t feel bad if it feels totally weird at first and please let me know if you have any questions! 🙂
Great tips. I almost gave up with my first (and only, so far) on day 3 because the pain was so bad. But a lactation consultant at the hospital really helped and encouraged me (mostly, she told me that it *truly* would get better in a relatively short amount of time, and it did). And I’m SO happy I kept with it. In fact, my 17-mo-old little girl is still nursing morning and night.
My next nursing issues have to do with nursing while pregnant, and then nursing a toddler and a newborn. I’m not pregnant, but it could happen while my toddler is still nursing because I’m waiting for her to wean herself (and she’s not interested at all in giving it up yet). I’ve heard that nursing while pregnant can cause preterm labor, which I definitely don’t want! I’m also afraid that once I have another baby, my toddler who is currently down to twice a day (much to her chagrin) will want to nurse more frequently. Anyone have experience with tandem nursing?
I agree, that a little encouragement can make all of the difference in the world especially when it can feel so daunting. I have read that you can nurse while pregnant but it can become difficult…maybe I will research this a little more and write a post on this as well. 🙂
As far as weaning a toddler goes…my best advice on that is to go out of town for a few days and have a babymoon! Having a few days away and being unavailable as a milk source helps both you and your babe. That is what I have done before with much thanks to my sister for helping with my little one while I went into transition of no longer nursing.
Agree with so much in your list! 🙂 getting comfortable while nursing is so important, especially since they nurse for almost an hour each time in the first few months! I did so much research on the internet about all the questions I had with regards to my baby, and did quite a bit of reading too.
On a related note, while I did feel it was important to invest in good nursing bras as you have listed, I was less willing to spend on nursing clothes. These are some ways that I turned my normal clothes into nursing wear.
