Easy to make plaid Christmas sugar cookies

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of the Chinet® brand . All opinions are 100% mine.

Did you know it’s so easy to paint sugar cookies? It’s a lot of fun and much easier than working with royal icing. Royal icing is so pretty, but painting is a great way to include your kids on the cookie making process. They can paint the cookies how ever they want! I’m going to share these fun and festive plaid sugar cookies that are perfect for Christmas. plaid-christmas-sugar-cookies You’ll first want to make sugar cookies. The recipe below is my favorite sugar cookie recipe of all time. It is perfect for roll out sugar cookies that you use for cookie cutters. The cookies hold their shape really well in the oven. We make this recipe for every single holiday because it’s fun to pull out the cookie cutters and make all the different shapes and sugar cookies are our favorite!

Sugar cookies

Makes 3-4 dozen cookies (depending on size of cookie cutter)

1 1/2 cups butter, softened

2 cups white sugar

4 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

5 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

Directions:

  • In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Mix in eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for 30-60 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Roll out dough on floured surface. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven. Cool completely.

Just keep the baking time in mind. You don’t want the cookies to be brown on the edges, only the very bottom. They will get too crispy and hard if the sides are browned. So pull these babies out of the oven at 8 minutes. They will continue to bake and set a little after they are out of the oven. cooks

After letting your cookies cool completely the next step is to add icing to the cookies. I’m going to share my favorite cookie decorating secret. This is my favorite way to frost sugar cookies. It dries into a flat and shiny surface that is perfect for painting. Take regular vanilla frosting (you can use homemade or a can bought from the store) microwave it for 20-30 seconds and stir. Dip each cookie into the melted frosting and tilt and swirl the cookie to let any excess drip. Place cookie on wax paper and then continue with the rest of the cookies. You may need to give the frosting a little stir every now and again if it looks like it’s separating. You can also add a few drops of food coloring to the frosting if you would like. But for the painted plaid cookies I kept it white.

Also, you can make royal icing for this recipe, if you prefer.

When they’re dry you are ready to paint the plaid. In a small bowl add five drops of green food coloring and dilute it with a drop of water. Do the same thing with the red food coloring in a different bowl. Then use brand new paintbrushes or paintbrushes that have only been used on food and never with paint to paint your design. I used a bigger flat paintbrush for the green and a small paintbrush for the red.

Step 1: Paint a plus sign in the middle of the cookie with the green food coloring. cookies

Step 2: Then add one line above and below the horizontal line and one line to each side of the vertical line. cookie

Step 3: Add two thin lines of red in-between each green line. This is easiest to do if you hold the cookie. That helped me keep a steadier hand so I could draw straighter lines. sugar-cookies   I love how these cookies turned out! Now let them dry completely and you’re ready to stick them on a  Chinet® Cut Crystal® plate to give to the neighbors or to take to your next holiday party.   The Chinet® brand is all about bringing people together to celebrate life’s occasions and I think sugar cookies always make those celebrations even sweeter. painting-cookiesChinet® disposable tableware makes entertaining easy because there is a wide range of products, so you will find everything you need for your party AND the products are disposable so cleanup is a breeze. • I had to do a double take to see that those were cookies! They look so pretty. I’ll have to try painting cookies. Frosting is not my strength so I may have better luck with a paint brush! Visiting from Thursday Favorite Things party.ReplyCancel

  • These are SO cute! I know I don’t have the patience to do the decorating, but if someone did them for me I’d be so happy 🙂ReplyCancel

  • I’ve been using an airbrush but your way is much easier, thank you!ReplyCancel
