7 Back-To-School Shopping Tips that Save Money

Back to School Shopping, Payless shoes, shopping, tips to save money

I can’t believe that I am already writing this post about Back to School shopping tips to save money as it feels like Summer just started! But alas, here we are. Here are a few tips that will help you save some cash as you put together school supplies and back to school shopping trips start to pile up!

1. Make a list of needs and WANTS

It is hard to anticipate exactly what the materials will be that each of your children will be, but if you start with a list in mind of needs and wants you can reduce confusion later when sales start popping up and you forget what it was that you actually needed. Take an assessment of each child’s closet to check on sizes, holes in jeans, and condition of their shoes.

2. Get your Children involved

When I was younger my parents would set an agreed upon amount that we could spend on our clothing for back to school. This way, if we had a “MUST have” item we could decide what we were willing to sacrifice to get it. This might mean that quantity was less but in our eyes the quality of the brand was worth it. If your children are younger obviously you will not get hung up on this as much, but even as parents it can be easy to get swept away in name brands and what “all the other kids are wearing.” Give your kids some ownership of this process and it should go much more smoothly.

3. Watch for Sales

It may be wise to start checking all the Sunday inserts from Staples, Office Max, Office Depot, Wal-Mart, and Target for school supply sales. They will pop up at different times so it is a good idea to make note of the sales and which ones fit the needs that you have in each category. One of my favorite sites to check for the best prices is Freebies2Deals.com.

4. Host a Swap

Have some friends with kids in the same boat as you? Have a fun little get together and swap clothes that you have that you don’t need any longer. This will not only save you money to have to purchase bigger sizes, but you can clear out items from your closets that you no longer need. Dessert always makes the night more fun too!

5. Shop the End of Summer Sales & Back to School Sales

You can easily find some great sales as merchants start to make way for heavier clothing that comes in the fall. I like to subscribe to emails or texts from stores that I love so that I can take advantage of their back to school sales. Payless Shoesource has a text message subscription that I am a part of that I will always use when buying my next pair of shoes. I loved these shoes that I found for my young ones this year!

6. Save a lot and Spend

You can mix old with new in any wardrobe. Shopping thrift stores, yard sales, or gently used stores like Plato’s Closet can be a great way to supplement a wardrobe and will give you the flexibility to spend the money on a few items that you really need, like a great pair of shoes or a nice new pair of jeans.

7. Shop for supplies for next year

What?! Yes, after the big rush of back to school sales end you will be able to buy supplies at a huge discount in preparation for the next year. You could stock up on basics that you know you will need each year; folders, pencils, glue, etc.
