Must Have Items for a New Puppy

Must Have items for a new puppy

You have decided to get a puppy and your world is about to get a little bit brighter. As a new fur mom or dad, you want to do what is best for your puppy and that means having all the right items at home. While the pet store and Air Mall might have quite a few fun looking contraptions, not all of those are necessary for the health and happiness of you and your pup. First focus on the necessities and then you can spoil them later because trust me, you will want to spoil that furry ball of sweetness.

Collar, Leash, and ID – You should get your pet a collar and leash for when you take your buddy out for a walk or to play in the park. The collar can house their ID tags, but you should also consider installing a microchip. Having both will ensure their safe return should they ever become lost.

Veterinarian – While not an item you can pick up at the store, getting your new puppy a vet should be a top priority. You should schedule a new pet visit to help them get to know each other and also do a check up to make sure your pup is healthy from the get go. If for any reason you do not feel comfortable with the vet, feel free to try another one!

CrateThese are great for a variety of trainings and housebreaking. They will also come in handy when it comes time to travel with your puppy!

Gate or Playpen – Puppies have a lot of energy, so you will probably want to contain their destruction to certain areas of the house. Playpens or gates are helpful for keeping them somewhere you can keep an eye on them.

Doggy Door – For the convenience of yourself and your puppy, you might consider installing a doggy door. While they do mean you will need to make sure you have an enclosed yard and your dog may track dirt in, the pros listed here seem to outweigh the cons. Doggy doors allow your puppy more freedom to run and play, which is especially helpful if you are not home during the day. A dog door also removes the need for them to scratch up your door and gives them a quick escape in case of an emergency.

Dog Bed – While some owners choose to let their dog sleep on their bed, your puppy is still going to need their own bed! Get them a nice dog bed and teach them to sleep there. You can even put it in their crate until they are house trained.

Food and Water Bowls – Plastic bowls tend to become toys and ceramic ones can break. Steel bowls are the best choice as they likely will not be easily played with, become broken, or harbor bacteria. They are also easy to clean and sanitize.

Food and Treats – Be sure to ask your vet or the breeder to make sure you are feeding your pup the correct diet. They can also help you to know how often you should feed your dog and the best method for rewarding them with treats.

Toys – Puppies need to run and play a lot! They can also do their fair share of damage to your shoes, decorations, and other items around your house. Be sure to buy them toys that are strong, durable, well-made and size appropriate for your particular dog. You may also consider a ball launcher, as their toys quickly get slobbery and playtime can become less fun for you.

Grooming Supplies – At a minimum, you should have a dog appropriate brush, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush and toothpaste. Make sure these have all been approved for pet use. While you should bathe them regularly, other grooming supplies are also available such as nail clippers, scissors, ear cleaning solutions, and many more products if you wish to do all the grooming on your own. Otherwise, you can simply take them in periodically to have a professional groomer do the dirty work.

As you and your new puppy are getting to know each other and quickly become a pet family, having these items handy will ensure your dog’s basic needs are met and that they are happy in their new home.
