Ways to Celebrate Earth Day with Your Kids

celebrate earth day with your kids

Earth Day is just two short days away and while we can’t all go lead a massive effort to beautify the earth, we can have experiences with our kids to let them know how important this earth is to us and why it is important to take the time to care! Here is a short list of ideas you could use!

1. Clean Up Play Time:

Who says cleaning can’t be fun? Take a walk or go to a local park that you love with trash bags in tow and get to work! You could make it even more fun by seeing how many items you could pick up in a short amount of time, looking for certain colors of garbage to clean up or make it a race to see who can find 10 items the quickest.

2. Take a Field Trip:

If you are able take a field trip to a local dump and show your child why it is so important that we take time to reuse and recycle. Your child will probably be amazed to see the amount of junk we produce and will think twice before throwing every single item in the garbage. Check our recylcerfinder.com to find the nearest recylcing center in your area as well.

3. Make Something New:

One way to reuse items in a fun way is to create with them! Use a small cardboard box to create a bird house, old cans with nuts and bolts to make a robot, make a homemade marble run, rocks to make a new painted design…let their creativity take them where it will!

4. Beautify Something:

Whether you decide you’d like to plant a tree, a flower, or simply weed your backyard; give your child the opportunity to make his/her little spot of the earth a little more beautiful. If you decide to plant a perennial flower they will get the satisfaction of seeing their hard work bloom again and again, year after year.

5. Create a family Challenge:

We are society that is filled with regular consumption of goods: food, water, electricity, you name it! Come up with a fun way to save on energy consumption as a family! Maybe you could have a no-tech, lights out day, or commit to riding bikes instead of using the car for a day, or perhaps find a way to create less waste when eating your food!

Recently I was introduced to a company who does just that.

Meet Eden. They’re a new environmentally friendly company that makes fresh, cold-pressed juices from imperfectly shaped fruits and vegetables. Why imperfect fruits and vegetables? Because despite how they look, they provide the same exact health benefits as perfectly shaped fruit.

Eden’s core belief is that diversity and imperfections are not flaws to be corrected but traits to be celebrated. And they use their line of juices to fight aspects of our culture that threaten diversity, conservation, and overall health:

Access to Clean, Healthy Food

While we throw away our food, over 15 million American kids go hungry every day and don’t have access to nutritious food.1 The worst part is that nutritious food is available; it’s just ending up in landfills instead of in the hands of those who need it.

Overfed and Undernourished

More than 2 in 3 adults are considered overweight or obese,2 and more than one-third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese.3 And fewer than 35% of Americans are eating the recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetable.4 So those in the U.S. who aren’t going hungry are overfed and undernourished.

While these problems can’t be solved overnight, Eden hopes to get one step closer with their line of fresh, cold-pressed juices. They’ll help limit the amount of food wasted in the U.S. by using produce that consumers and retailers usually throw away for cosmetic reasons. They’ll also make nutrient-rich food more accessible to those who struggle to get nutritious foods and those who want a simple way to improve their diets.
