DIY duct tape bookmark

Summer is one of my favorite times of the year! Summer is when we catch up and reconnect as a family. Summer is also when I allow myself to read as much as I want….which is a lot. I love to read, during the school year there are too many things going on to keep up with all the books I want to read. But in the summer I can say up to 2am reading and not feel guilty about it.
I’m happy to say that all 5 of my kiddos love to read as much as I do! I set aside at least 20 minutes a day for everyone to read whatever book they want, of course they can always read more if they want. With so many people reading books we are often searching for something to use as a bookmark. Right now my 11 year old is using a chicken feather, it’s clean I promise.
I thought it was time to come up with something a bit better than a chicken feather. Of course the kids wanted to help make their own, thankfully these Duck Tape Bookmarks are so easy anyone can make them.

For this project you will need:

• Duck Tape, we found the duck tape sheets are easiest to fold without getting air pockets but rolls work great too.
• Scissors
• Beading Thread, you could also use embroidery floss.

To Make the Bookmark

Cut your tape the length and width that you like. For duck tape sheets we cut our pieces 2 inches wide by 5 inches long, with the rolls we cut the tape a bit longer usually 8 inches.
Fold your tape in half. If you are using the sheets DO NOT remove the backing of the tape first, create your crease then take the backing off and fold the tape.
Trim off any parts that don’t line up perfectly with your scissors. Then cut the corners off the folded end. This gives you the “bookmark” look. You could also leave them square if you like that look better.

Create a hole in the top of your bookmark with your scissors or a hole punch.

To Make the Tassel

I like to make my tassels out of beading thread because it is a little thicker and stronger than embroidery floss, however use what you have on hand.

Take the entire skein of thread, without taking the paper off cut off two 4 inch lengths of thread. We played around with some shorter lengths of thread as well but I like the look of the longer thread in the bookmark.

Weave the end of your length of thread through the folded top of the skein of thread, tie a knot close to the skein of thread to keep it all together. Then take off the paper from around the thread. Now tie the second piece of thread around the skein of thread just under the folded part. Then use your scissors to cut the tassel to the length you like.

 

Weave the end of the thread you used to tie around the folded part of the skein through the hole you made in the bookmark. Tie a knot in the end.
Now you have a fun, waterproof, strong bookmark that will last through many books and the entire summer.
