Halloween is my favorite holiday so because of that we have quite the collection of Halloween books. I keep them up in my closet and when the end of September rolls around I pull them down and I read them with my kids multiple times a day. Some of these books are so loved that they actually stay in our regular rotation all year long. These are spooky books, but they are still fun and they aren’t scary. They are perfect Halloween books for young kids. I hope you enjoy them!
My Monster Mama Loves Me So by Laura Leuck
This book is just plain adorable and sweet. This shows a mother/child relationship with a silly twist. There are also hidden pictures on every page to make it even more interesting and fun.
The Runaway Pumpkin by Kevin Lewis
A very fun, light-hearted story that everyone will love.
The Night Before Halloween by Natasha Wing
A twist on the classic Christmas poem. It’s cute to see what monsters do to get ready for Halloween. I love the way the book flows – it’s almost like a song – and the illustrations are very cute.
Goodnight Goon: A Petrifying Parody by Michael Rex
I normally would say “Goodnight Moon” should never be touched, but this is a cute spooky parody on the classic. As a warning: this book is probably one of the scarier ones on this list. I don’t think it’s too scary, but you might want to check it out first to see how you think your kids will react to it.
It’s Pumpkin Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff
This is especially perfect for toddlers because it is a board book, but preschoolers won’t be bored with it if you read it to them (see what I did there board/bored!? I’m hilarious).
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams
The repetitions in this book make it easy for kids to catch on right away and help you tell the story. This is maybe my favorite book on the list (shhh…don’t tell the others), it’s a fun, great book! A perfectly classic Halloween book.
The Spooky Wheels on the Bus by J. Elizabeth Mills
Based on the “Wheels on the Bus” song with a spooky twist. It has cute illustrations and it will quickly become a favorite.
Ten Timid Ghosts by Jennifer O’Connell
A cute rhyming book that teaches counting as well.
Too Many Pumpkins by Linda White
This book is very amusing and I love the lesson to look on the bright side and make the most of every situation.
The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano
Spookley teaches us that being a little different is okay and sometimes those differences are our biggest strengths.
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
We all know that the movie is a classic, must-watch for Halloween so why not read the book first?
Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson
This is one of the books that stays in our regular rotation of books even when Halloween is over, we love it that much. We love the sing-song way this book reads. It’s cute, funny, and the illustrations are bright and fun.
Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman
My kids loved this book and it’s the one they would beg for over and over. I liked it too, but then I really fell in love when I heard my son’s first grade class sing along to it. Those kids were so into the story that I knew this one was a keeper.
Happy Halloween everyone! I hope you enjoy these books!

Love this! My son loves books so much- I need to look for these and other Halloween themed books!
Melissa, You’ve got to check out my new favorite Halloween book I came across this year. It’s called Frankenstein by Ludworst Bemonster (really Rick Walton and Nathan Hale). It’s a Halloween parody to one of my favorite books, Madeline. It’s so funny, my kids just love it!
Looks like it’s time for a trip to the library! Thanks for this great list!
